This downloadable pdf file contains images and transcripts of the baptismal registers for Dunsop Bridge, St. Hubert (RC) Church: 1865 – 1924.

It should be noted that the small number of baptisms means that for several years, no baptisms were recorded, in particular: 1890-1895 inc.; 1897-1899 inc.; 1909; 1914; 1920 & 1921.

Members of the Irish Branch of Manchester & Lancashire FHS have by kind permission of the Salford Diocese, transcribed details of the 1,542 baptisms recorded in the registers.

The transcript provides full details as contained in the register and is accompanied by an index to the 7,078 names of children, parents and godparents which appear in the register entries.

Also included are images of the original baptism registers.

About this church

This small but magnificent church was built to the design of Edward Pugin, from, it is believed, the winnings of the racehorse Kettledrum in the Derby 1861 owned by Col. Towneley.

Until then the Catholics in the Hodder Valley attended Mass in the chapel of Thorneyholme Hall, then the home of the Towneley family and part of their Whitewell Estate. Col. Charles Towneley had the church and the nearby Thorneyholme R.C. primary school built on land belonging to the estate.

The church was opened on the 2nd May 1865 by Bishop Richard Roskell of Nottingham.

The above description is taken from a fuller description of the church which appears on their web site www.olotv.org.uk/dunsop-bridge/history
