Conflict & Cooperation – Rochdale and the Pioneering Spirit
1790 – 1844 by John Cole, 21 x 20 cm (8.25 x 8 in), 54pp.
Rochdale people have good reason to be proud of the fact that theirs was the town in which modern Co-operative trading finally got off the ground as an efficient and profitable enterprise. The movement which started here formed an essential part of the British labour movement for a century and a half as well as giving inspiration and guidance to similar movements throughout the world. The contents include: From Market to Mill Town, Churches and Chapels, Bread Riots and Shuttle Gathering, Midnight Mischief, The Charter, The Whole Charter and Nothing But The Charter, “Anthenian Democracy”, Owenites and Socialists – Towards A Co-operative Commonwealth. Well illustrated with over 40 pictures and drawings.
There is a list of some of the Rochdale Pioneers, most of them were weavers.. Also there are notes on each of the contents, plus a bibliography of all the sources use in this book.
